Normalize mp3 files

May 10th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Have you ever been listening to your mp3s and a new song from your play list comes on that is way louder that the other mp3s? You have to quickly reach for the volume knob to keep from breaking your ear drums! I listen to mp3s all the time at work, in the car and at home and I had to find a program that would NORMALIZE all these files. I did find one. The name of this cool little application is MP3Gain. It is freeware, which means that it is free for personal use. You can download it here: http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/download.php

Once you’ve installed this app to normalize mp3 files, you will have to add your mp3 files to the program using the “add files” button on the top left. Browse your hard drive for the songs that need to be normalized. Then select all of the mp3 files in the window (hold down the shift button and left click) and then right click and select “Apply Album Gain”. Then watch the program do its magic. That’s all there is to it.

It could take some time to normalize all your mp3 tracks if they are all in album folders, since I don’t see a way to do a batch normalize. If you know how to do this, holler back.

Thank you for this info. I have wanted to do this in the past, but didn’t realize it was called “normalize”. Why not “sound leveling” or “decibel balancing” - LOL. I will definitely use this though - thanks.
